Border Terrier Picture

In a Border Terrier picture, you’ll see a medium-sized dog with a coarse wiry coat. The breed originates from the Border country between England and Scotland. Its main purpose was hunting rodents, foxes, otters, and badgers, so these dogs had to be strong, agile, quick-witted, and able to work cooperatively with people. The Border Terrier is a relatively new breed. The first Border Terrier was registered by the AKC in 1913. The first breed standard was adopted in 1920.

A modern Border Terrier picture features almost the same dog which was used for small game hunting in the early 20th century. Working abilities and personality of purebred dogs are more important than conformation, that’s why the breed standard for the Border Terrier is not very strict. The height of purebred Border Terriers can vary between 11 and 16 inches at the withers. The wither height should be slightly greater than the body length. The proportion between the height and body length is more important than any measurement taken separately. The weight of the Border Terrier varies from 13 to 16 pounds. Overweight dogs are not able to perform the original task of the breed.

One of the main characteristics of the breed that can be seen in any Border Terrier picture is a large otter-shaped head with a broad skull, curved stop, and short muzzle. The ears in these dogs are v-shaped and pendent; the eyes are dark hazel and moderate in size; the nose is large and black. The teeth of the Border Terrier are large in proportion to the body size, sound, sharp and meeting in a scissors bite. The body and shoulders of the Border Terrier are narrow, but well-muscled. The chest is deep; the neck is rather long and strong. The legs in this breed are straight and long. The short tail is thick at the base and tapering towards the tip. The preferred coat colors in this breed are grizzle and tan, blue and tan, solid red or wheaten.

The gait of these dogs should be straight and rhythmical. The Border Terrier has a typical terrier personality. It is very agile and fierce when at work and good-tempered and gentle with the family. The wonderful personality of this breed is evident even in the Border Terrier picture.
