The dogs are alert and lively, but mild-mannered. They are especially affectionate with children and want to please, so they are relatively easy to train. The dogs are 13-16 inches (33-41cm) high and the bitches are about 11-14 inches (28-36cm) high. The weight of a male is 13-16 pounds (6-7kg) and bitches are 13-16 pounds (6-7kg).

The dogs became a breed in the mid-nineteenth century and originated from the area where Northumberland in England joins Roxburgshire in Scotland. They were bred by travelers and later farmers in the Coquet valley. The dogs are full of energy and fun loving.
